  6. File Investigator identifies over 330 types of files by content
  7. rather than filename extension.  It extracts information out of
  8. many file types: image resolutions, sampling rates, document
  9. titles, etc..  Background information on each file type is
  10. provided.  With this utility, you can identify files that
  11. Windows doesn't recognize, correct a wrong file extension, and
  12. find files faster.  The FIPROP.EXE program returns an error
  13. level identifying a file, for BBS file screening.

  45. INSTALLATION

  55.     If you downloaded a .ZIP file, then you will need to use
  56.     PKUnzip (or other Zip utility) on the file.

  58.     Steps:
  59.       1. Copy the archive file to a temporary directory.
  60.       2. Run PKUNZIP.EXE on the archive.
  61.          Ex: >PKUNZIP -S<password> FI141.ZIP
  62.       3. Run FISETUP.EXE.
  63.       4. Answer each of the installation prompts.
  64.       5. Delete the files that were expanded from the archive to
  65.          your temporary directory.

  68.     If you downloaded a .EXE file, then you simply run the
  69.     self-extracting archive file.  It takes care of the rest.

  71.     Windows Explorer example:
  72.       1. Find the directory that the archive file was downloaded to.
  73.       2. Double click on the archive file.  (ex: FI141.EXE)

  76.       1. Click the 'Start' button on the Windows Task Bar.

  90.   File Investigator requires MS Windows 95/98 or MS Windows NT 4.0.
  91.   While it may work with MS Windows NT 3.x or MS Windows 3.x + Win32s,
  92.   they have not been tested and is not guaranteed to work.

  94.   File Investigator Properties fits on a 640x480 screen, but File
  95.   Investigator File Find requires a 800x600 (small font) or larger
  96.   screen resolution in order to be fully visible.

  327.     Q: When I paid for File Investigator over the Internet, I never received
  328.        my password.

  330.     A: The password is included in the email that is sent to you, from
  331.        DigiBuy, as confirmation of your purchase.  Make sure that you keep
  332.        that password to unlock future updates to the software.

  335.     Q: The password that I recieved after purchasing File Investigator does
  336.        not work.
  337.  
  338.     A: You may have either downloaded the wrong archive file, or misunderstood
  339.        the password.  There are three different versions of File Investigator:
  340.        Properties, File Find Upgrade (from Properties version), and File Find
  341.        (non-upgrade).  Each of these archives have different passwords.
  342.        Double check that you downloaded the one that you paid for.
  343.  
  344.        The passwords are all four letters long and must be typed in all lower
  345.        case letters.
  346.  
  347.  
  348.     Q: I have some files that File Investigator either does not recognize or
  349.        identifies as the wrong type of file.
  350.  
  351.     A: It is very difficult to identify many types of files, because they
  352.        either have no recognizable file header or the RobWare engineers have
  353.        not had the opportunity to analyze them yet.  Some text files contain
  354.        the same words/keys as other file formats.  This often makes it
  355.        impossible to discern them from the file format that they emulate.
  356.  
  357.        We at RobWare are eager to improve the File Investigator Engine to
  358.        minimize these problems.  If you would like us to improve or add a file
  359.        format/type please follow these directions:
  360.  
  361.        1. Send three or more example files to Support@RobWare.com.
  362.        2. Include any information that you have on the file type.
  363.        3. For each file sent, describe the differences between each one.
  364.           Ex: File 1 is a 300 x 600 picture file, File 2 is a 100 x 200 fax
  365.               image, etc.
  366.        4. Include the name(s) of the product(s) that created the file(s), what
  367.           company makes/sells that product(s), how a RobWare engineer can get a
  368.           copy of the product to create more test files.
  369.  
  370.        We understand that you may not be able to provide all of this
  371.        information, but what ever you can provide will be much appreciated.
  372.  
  373.        There are more detailed instructions provided in the Adding/Improving
  374.        File Types section of the File Investigator Help file.

  377.     Q: When I run File Investigator, it is larger than my screen.
  378.  
  379.     A: You are probably using File Investigator File Find with a 640x480 screen
  380.        resolution or 800x600 with a large screen font.  The solution is to
  381.        change to a small screen font or increase your screen resolution.

  383.          Click on the 'Start' button in the Task Bar.
  384.          Click on the 'Settings/Control Panel' menu option.
  385.          Double click on the 'Display' icon.
  386.          Select the 'Settings' tab.
  387.          Change the 'Font size' to 'Small Fonts'

  391.     Q: I tried to uninstall File Investigator by deleting all of its files,
  392.        but the Registry entries and the 'Investigate' option are still there.

  394.     A: You need to reinstall File Investigator, then use the uninstall option.
  395.        The uninstall option in located on the 'Start' menu at
  396.        Start/Programs/RobWare/Uninstall File Investigator.
  397.        If you have trouble finding or using that option, then you can
  398.        uninstall manually by running 'FISETUP.EXE /U' from a DOS Prompt, while
  399.        in the directory that the files were installed to.
